Dark Light

Here are what I consider to be the top 10 most important and broadly applicable leadership observations:

  1. Build and sustain strong relationships – this is key to success when working across cultures and with diverse groups.
  2. Lead by example – demonstrate the behaviors and values you want to see in others.
  3. Understand the culture and history of the people/region you are working in. Cultural fluency is critical.
  4. Be patient and take the long view – nation building and cultural change take time. Don’t expect quick results.
  5. Balance being decisive with being inclusive – make timely decisions but get buy-in from key stakeholders.
  6. Communicate clearly and consistently – align words and actions. Follow through on commitments.
  7. Empower and develop others – build capacity in local leaders and institutions.
  8. Be adaptable and open to new approaches – rigidly sticking to one strategy rarely works in complex environments.
  9. Take care of your people – ensure they have proper rest, resources, and support to be effective.
  10. Maintain your integrity and ethical standards, even in difficult circumstances. This builds trust and credibility.

These leadership principles seem to be applicable across military, government, business and other contexts when operating in challenging, cross-cultural environments. The observations emphasize relationship-building, cultural understanding, long-term thinking, and ethical leadership as keys to success.
